Taxpayers Save $1,000,000 per Year with Universal Ballasts

When the Tennessee Board of Regents replaced 57,253 ballasts at six state colleges, the result was approximately $1 million in annual energy savings. Virtually all of the ballasts used in the retrofit project were ULTim8 ballasts from Universal Lighting.

The project encompassed more than four-million square feet of classroom, hallway, office, and multi-use space at the following state colleges in East Tennessee:

• Pellissippi State Technical Community College
• Roane State Community College
• Walters State Community College
• Chattanooga State Technical Community College
• East Tennessee State University
• Northeast State Technical Community College

With energy costs rising steadily, lighting technology continues to make huge strides in conserving electricity and money. The Tennessee Board of Regents wanted to take advantage of this fact by upgrading the ballasts at its state universities. A national energy services company recommended to the Board of Regents that it replace the T12 lighting at its facilities with T8 ballasts and lamps. Stones River, a lighting contractor headquartered in Nashville, Tenn., was selected to handle the installations.

Ballastar® T5 Light-Level Switching Ballasts

Universal Lighting announces an addition to the most efficient T5 light-level switching ballast family on the market today with the release of the new Ballastar T5 ballast (B228PU115S50D) for use with F28T5 lamps. With an increase in efficiency of 8% over standard T5 ballasts, Ballastar T5 ballasts make it easy to implement controllable lighting solutions without special controls. A single control lead allows the user to switch from full light output down to 50% with a standard wall switch or lighting relay. The new Ballastar ballast is available with a ballast factor of 1.15, programmed start technology for long lamp life, universal input voltage (120 to 277 volts), and end-of-lamp life shutdown circuitry with auto-reset.

3-Lamp High Lumen ULTim8® Ballasts

Universal Lighting expands its ULTim8 family of ballasts with the new B332IUNVHEH-A—a 3-lamp ballast specifically designed for high lumen, high bay fluorescent applications. Two 3-lamp, high ballast factor (1.18) ULTim8 ballasts in one 6-lamp F32T8 fixture can deliver the same system lumens as a standard 400-watt metal halide system, but at almost half the input power. The universal voltage feature (120 to 277 volts) reduces inventory and ensures that the right voltage product is ready for installation. Compatible with standard F32T8 lamps as well as the 30, 28, and 25 watt energy-saving T8 lamps, the new ULTim8 ballasts save an additional 5% over standard electronic ballasts. Other benefits over HID lighting include quiet operation, elimination of warm-up and re-strike requirements, and improved and consistent lamp color.

Basic-12™ Ballasts for F96T12 and F96T12ES Lamps

Universal Lighting introduces the latest addition to the Basic-12™ family of ballasts with the B260IUNVHP for use with F96T12 and energy-saving F96T12ES lamps. This new Basic-12™ ballast is designed to replace traditional magnetic T12 ballasts in existing or new fixtures while reducing energy consumption by more than 15%. With universal input voltage (120 to 277 volts), the B260IUNVHP features parallel lamp operation. It provides the same amount of light as magnetic T12 ballasts with reduced operating costs, improved lamp performance, and quieter operation. The Basic-12 is also lighter than magnetic ballasts, making it easier to handle and install in a fixture’s ballast channel. Basic-12 ballasts fully comply with today’s new federal ballast efficiency requirements for new fixtures as well as the 2010 requirements for replacement ballasts.
